January was finished off with an impulsive trip to Topsail Hill State Park near Destin, FL. I think we've been here twice in the past. Topsail used to be a privately owned campground that was purchased by the state. That means it has a lot of the little extras that make "roughing it" more fun. They have cable tv, full hookups, concrete pads, a pool, shuffleboard court and horse shoes. However, the disadvantage of camping spontaneously is that you don't have many sites from which to choose. There are many sites here that have plenty of foliage to separate you from your neighbor, but the one we had this time did not have that barrier so we didn't spend any time outside in our chairs. We did get some good hikes in as it is one mile to the beach and we walked there and back every day.
We went into Destin shopping and looking around one day and went back another day to just eat out. I rented movies and watched them in the evening and Bubba watched Fox news. It was a good getaway and added some variety to our lives.
We have just about made up our minds to go on a cruise - maybe just a four day one to see what it is like. We would prefer to travel with someone who knows what they are doing, but we're not idiots so I think we can figure it out. If we enjoy it, an Alaskan cruise may be in our future. We are also planning on going to Glacier National Park in Montana and a park in Canada in September. We are going to submit our applications for passports next week. It won't hurt to be prepared. 😀
