Doctor Appointments, Fishing, Tomatoes

The weeks after our trip to Eufaula have not been too newsworthy.  Doctor appointments are out of the way.  It is so hard to schedule an appointment so far ahead when you don't know what you are going to be doing.

We were eating lunch with Bubba's sister, Azalea, one Monday when he got a call from his friend, Charles, that the fish were biting.  We had already planned to go fishing the next day and were even more excited to get a good report.  We caught 24 fish which was a gracious plenty for a fish fry the next night.

We're amazed at the size of this tree.  Bubba says it looked this big when he was a little boy.

Memorial Day was spent picking tomatoes which is one of my favorite summertime activities.  This was the earliest we had ever been able to pick and the flavor was better than ever.

The rest of the week was spent catching up around the house.  We're getting ready for an visit from Amelia.  She is going to spend a week with us and we are going to St. George Island State Park for some beach time and camping.  Amy will be joining her at the end of the week for a visit and we are looking forward to good times with both of them.

Camping on Lake Eufaula

For years we've traveled past Lakepoint State Park on Lake Eufaula as we go back and forth to Atlanta.  I guess the only Alabama State Park we have stayed at is the one in Opp where Joe and Judy live.  It is beautiful with full hook-ups, cable tv, and WI-FI so we were expecting to be dazzled by the Lakepoint park.  It is a really nice park, but not quite up to our expectations at least to start with.  We found two huge sites next to each other on the water with plenty of shade.  The park was not crowded so we had a lot of privacy and were able to tie Joe's boat up right behind the camp site.  Several tv stations were available and we were very comfortable for the four nights we stayed there.

I've always heard people talk about the fishing on Lake Eufaula.  I got Bubba a fishing license but held off on getting me one until I could check out the fishing situation.  His license was $50 and will only be good until August.  We started off with noodle fishing.  With this you take a swimming pool noodle and cut it into lengths, add line, weight, and a hook and drop it over with some delicious bait attached.  Joe and Judy had seventeen noodles that we put out Monday afternoon after getting settled in.  By the time they had all been dropped over the side, we saw two of the noodles moving and sinking so we had fish rather quickly.  Unfortunately that was not a sign that we had hit the jackpot.  They were the only two caught on that outing.

We set out a trot line in a fishy location and Bubba and Joe went out and fished with poles.  The noodles were set out a number of times.  Happily, we finally had enough fish for a big fish fry on Thursday.  Needless to say, I did not buy myself a fishing license.

Here come Joe and Bubba after a morning of fishing.

Wednesday, Judy had a doctor's appointment in Dothan so I went with her and we had a day that included a nice lunch out and some shopping.  One day we went riding around the Eufaula area and ate lunch at Michelle's Restaurant, which had a very good buffet.  We rode over to Hard Ridge Campground and White Oaks which are Corps of Engineers campgrounds.  There are definitely a lot of nice places to camp on this lake.

Friday we had all planned to go home, but Bubba and I decided that we would stay a couple more nights and checked in at the White Oaks Campground which is on the other side of Eufaula.  We had a really nice campsite with a concrete pad right on the water.  This area was more like a swimming area on the lake.
Bubba grilled pork chops for supper and I fixed potatoes and carrots to go with them.  We spent the afternoon reading and relaxing outside.  It was very pleasant.

Saturday we changed our mind about staying another night and headed for home.  We stopped at the truck stop in Marianna which is one of my favorite places to eat when we are going by with the trailer.  It was Popeye's fried chicken one more time on the way home.

Sunday was Mother's Day so we got up, went to church, and Bubba grilled steak for my Mother's Day meal.  It was a good way to finish off the week.  Our next trip will be St. George Island and Amelia will be with us.  We are looking forward to seeing her.  I've been on Pinterest looking for some fun things to do while she is here.

Let me conclude this post with a Bubba story.  We were both sitting outside Friday evening at this beautiful camp site on the water as the sun was just beginning to set.  We had both been reading/dozing and I looked over at Bubba and he appeared to be lost in  thought.  "What are you thinking about?" I asked.  I thought his response would be something deep that he had been pondering for quite some time.  I waited for him to answer.  "I'm thinking about Harold's Auto Parts," he said.  "I'm thinking about all the things you can get there and how they will even replace your windshield wipers for you when you buy new ones."
Back off ladies, he's all mine!!
